Germany’s Heating Transition: Heat Pumps & Electric Furnaces
August 21, 2026A Lennox furnace that had been in service for 69 years just won its owner a prize from Button’s Heating and Air Conditioning in Pickering, Ontario. Button’s was running a contest to find the oldest performing furnace in the region and the classic brown Lennox beat its closest runner-up by 9 years.
The prize was a new furnace, which homeowner Doug Bothwell was happy to accept. Although he noted that the old model had never given him any trouble, he said, “Let’s just hope this one is half as good as the old one. That would be great.”
While most furnaces will never approach that age, the story serves as a reminder that quality equipment, proper duct cleaning, furnace cleaning and routine maintenance can have a remarkable impact on the lifespan of a heating system.
Quality Equipment Is Built to Last
Not all furnaces are created equal. While today’s furnaces are far more energy efficient than those built decades ago, the quality of the equipment still matters. A well-designed furnace with durable components is generally more reliable, operates more efficiently and requires fewer unexpected repairs throughout its life.
That’s why we install trusted brands that have earned a reputation for dependable performance. Choosing a quality furnace is an investment not only in comfort, but also in long-term reliability and lower operating costs. Even the best equipment, however, requires regular care.
Machine Maintenance Makes the Biggest Difference
That old Lennox furnace didn’t survive nearly 70 years through luck alone. Like any piece of mechanical equipment, heating systems perform best when they receive routine maintenance.
Every heating season, we recommend having your furnace professionally inspected and cleaned. During a maintenance appointment, we check safety controls, inspect the heat exchanger, test the ignition system, examine electrical components and verify that the blower motor is operating correctly.
These inspections often identify small issues before they develop into expensive repairs or unexpected breakdowns during the coldest days of winter. Routine maintenance also helps ensure your furnace operates as efficiently as possible, reducing unnecessary wear on critical components.
Every furnace has a finite lifespan, but regular maintenance, routine cleaning and quality equipment can help you get the most from your heating system.
At RT Heating & Air Conditioning, we provide professional furnace repair, seasonal maintenance and new furnace installation throughout Central Alberta. Whether your furnace is five years old or approaching retirement, we’ll help keep it operating safely, efficiently and reliably for as long as possible.
