Why Summer Is the Best Time to Replace Your Furnace
August 29, 2026Every summer, cottonwood trees release thousands of fluffy seeds that drift through neighbourhoods across Central Alberta. While they may look harmless, that fluffy white material can create real problems for outdoor air conditioning units.
At RT Heating & Air Conditioning, one of the most common maintenance issues we see in early summer is condenser coils clogged with cottonwood and other airborne debris.
Why Cottonwood Causes Problems
Your outdoor condenser pulls large volumes of air through thin metal coils to release heat collected from inside your home. When cottonwood accumulates on those coils, airflow becomes restricted. Instead of releasing heat efficiently, the air conditioner must work harder to achieve the same level of cooling. The result may include longer run times, higher electricity bills and unnecessary wear on the compressor.
What Homeowners Can Do
Fortunately, keeping the outdoor unit clean is relatively simple. Periodically inspect the condenser throughout the summer. Remove leaves, grass and visible debris from around the unit, keeping shrubs and vegetation trimmed back to allow adequate airflow.
If cottonwood has collected on the exterior coils, a gentle rinse with a garden hose is often enough to remove loose material. Avoid pressure washers, as they can bend the delicate aluminum fins that help transfer heat.
When Professional Cleaning Makes Sense
Not all debris can be removed from the outside. Dust, pollen and fine particles often become trapped deeper within the coil, where homeowners cannot safely access them. During a maintenance visit, we can thoroughly inspect and clean the condenser while checking refrigerant levels, electrical components and overall system performance.
This helps restore airflow and allows the air conditioner to operate as efficiently as possible during the hottest weeks of summer. Your outdoor air conditioner works hard all season long. Keeping the condenser clean allows it to reject heat efficiently, improving comfort while reducing unnecessary strain on the equipment.
If your system hasn’t been inspected recently, RT Heating & Air Conditioning is here to help. We provide professional air conditioning maintenance and repairs to keep Central Alberta homes cool all summer.
